With BT’s announcement of switching off all ISDN and PSTN’s by 2025 and migrating customers to an IP network, many have wondered what benefit this move will have on them? This move may be years away but there are a lot of benefits for people to take advantage of and many customers should consider moving sooner. What is SIP?
SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol, this basically means a phone line carried over a fibre internet connection, this removed the need for the older ISDN line.
What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, and this is a solution that moves your whole phone system online so that all calls and activity are sent across an internet connection. Being a cloud based phone solution, this can bring a business a new, wide range of additional features such as call recording, receiving voicemails via emails, call queuing and unified communications, as well as the ability to access the phone system on multiple devices such as mobiles, tablets and desktops.

So, what are the benefits of SIP and VoIP?
As well as the additional feature benefits listed above there are multiple other benefits to choosing one of these two technologies. A recent survey carried out by TalkTalk Business found that many businesses have found great benefits by making the switch. 24% of those who completed the survey, said that adopting SIP had enabled more flexibility within their business, while 31% said that adopting the technology has assisted the organisation in expanding their business to more locations with greater efficiency. One in four said that completing the switch more than halved their telephony costs. Benefits of these technologies include:
- Cost savings – There is a 78% cost reduction when using VoIP or Sip telephony compared to ISDN due to cheaper calls and no more expensive line rental charges.
- Greater mobility and flexibility – These technologies are great for remote workers or companies that require flexibility. A remote working can access the business telephony system from any location as long as they have an internet connection and a device to make a phone. You can move your business anywhere in the UK and simply plug the phones back into the network in order to be back up and running, there is no need to change numbers. These systems are also much more flexible in terms of adding or removing numbers which can be done easily.
- Higher resiliency – As these technologies are delivered through internet connections there is a lot more safety and protection with these systems. Internet security is a big thing now and as the world-wide web develops so does the technology to keep it secure. Many businesses also have multiple fibre lines installed to ensure uptime is always available.
- Scalability – VoIP technology can make scaling your business a much easier task. As your business grows, you can risk the problem of out-growing our technically, as VoIP is run through the cloud it is a much easier solution to scale up or down to match your business. This is also very important for companies that have peak sessions, why pay for a larger solution all year round if you only need something that size during peak periods of the year?
